Hitler didn't put enough emphasis on weather costing him lots of territory, thousands of men, and ultimately the war. Had he done it more correctly, WWII likely wouldn't have ended anywhere near 1945.

It was an attrition war and sadly, Hitler disobeyed the number one rule of attrition: GET IT OVER WITH QUICKLY!
Defense should have been anticipated and its sad that Hitler was so successful in using Fifth Column support for the invasion of Western Europe, yet, he did not consider that for Russia! The Latvians and Lithuanians especially could have been impressed into service as willing compatriots. By the time Hitler considered it, the game was over.
