Not a sub guy, but wouldn't it be easier, more cost effective, and most importantly a strategic multiplier to add a however long plug into the middle of the Virginia class subs and place 2-4 or so SLBMs in there with the option of using those tubes the same way the SSGNs use their tubes for cruise missiles and SOF dry dock shelters?

This means we always have a few SLBMs out and about with the subs still having the capability to act as attack submarines.

I suspect there are disadvantages but with a constrained budget it might make more sense.

I suppose that jumboizing a sub could be done, but it's not anywhere near as simple as it sounds.

True it is not easy but we have done it before for they special mission subs such as the Jimmy Carter. I would just think it costs less than a whole new sub.
