Mental illness alone does not excuse one from legal culpability for criminal acts.

That is exactly what I've been trying to say along with the fact of how the label gives the perp's lawyers a chance to file with medical providers so their client can get a lesser sentence or in this case plead down and you walk away.

There's mental illness and there's the question of one's ability to distinguish between right and wrong. Mental illness should not be an excuse for anything. It would be easy to argue that anyone who commits a crime or harbors irrational hate is in some sense mentally ill. Plea deals, as in this case, is simply lazy prosecution

No lawyer here, but outside of being lazy, why would you go down that road? Why start off with the defense as a tactic? I would've held that one close and played it later. Let the prosecution throw their cards early, and then slam the courts with this "weak defense".I thought the other charges were more severe, but due to us not having a clear definition of what domestic terrorism is, I used McVeigh vs Hasan. Both were military but only one was clearly a terrorist.

So is his White Supremacist ideology a mental illness as well? This is nuts. From the charges, it sounds like he already had a criminal conviction record so screw the plea deal. And I know someone is going to say this looks like "White privilege" because perception does matter; regardless, someone who plans to murder people and/or actually does commit the act should not be entitled the mental illness nor the insanity defense.

My issue is it appears whenever there is a domestic shooting, BEFORE the doctors can give a "qualified diagnosis" the "mentally ill" label is applied. White Privilege? When you use the comparison, it's not a stretch, but this asshole had a record, was known to be a part of racist gang in prison, so white privilege and mentally ill just went out the door.
