10 day "conversion" training? I don't want to sound salty but it seems to be a slap in the face to call these NCOs "Drill Sergeants"! I need to hear some outside opinions.

In my opinion, if you didn’t attend drill sergeant academy, you should not be able to wear the hat and get the same respect. Many sergeants busted their asses to pass drill sergeant academy and now it’s just a 10 day conversion? It’s just not the same thing.

Not to mention the 2-3 grueling years of being a Drill. Now it's more of putting the hat on NCOs than making a Drill Sergeant.

"The drill sergeant course at the U.S. Army Drill Sergeant Academy lasts about nine weeks, Mitchell said. And NCOs who in the past trained to be AIT platoon sergeants went through the first six weeks of that school alongside those learning to be drill sergeants.
After that, those destined to be AIT platoon sergeants would split off from drill sergeant school and go learn other things. Part of their specialized AIT platoon sergeant training involves attendance at the master resilience course.

They aren’t drill sgt in the real sense. AIT Drill Sgt’s never were. While the ones I knew went to the same school I did and had to complete the same course of instruction and any other drill sgt, the simple fact is they didn’t take civilians and turn them into soldiers. We already did that. They basically marched them to school in the morning and picked them up in the evening. They would at times conduct PT but I saw more of them standing around while a student leader led the pt. It was shameful. I think it’s wrong to give the campaign hat to someone after 10 days of training. The fraternity of drill sgt’s certainly won’t accept them.

No, no we wont 1SG. The hat is a symbol. Actually its a statement to everyone that he/she is a professional that knows his trade and demands excellence. The badge was not mentioned in this article. I will try to find out if they also get the badge. I hope not because the badge goes on your official military record but the hat does not.

The new SMA must be a softy, get this people trained right. Stop the BS. Those that went to the school like I did, do not support this new, conversion.
