Teacher accidentally fires a gun in California high school during class on public safety

This is a teacher who moonlights as a reserve police officer. How does this even happen in a school setting? It is my understanding that if the officer is not on duty and if he is teaching during the day, he is not on duty he should not have firearms on school grounds. He should suffer the same consequences any one of us would had we brought a firearm onto school property and got caught, let alone firing off a round! Any thoughts?

Regardless of who you are you shouldn't be using live rounds when you're conducting a block of instruction.

One of the first things I learned in fire safety class was to keep your finger off of the trigger and outside the guard until you were ready to pull the trigger. hmmm I guess this officer forgot that one lesson. Beginners 101. Even with the gun loaded why wasn't the safety on? Why didn't he take the mag out before he started to handle the weapon? Why didn't he make sure it was unloaded? Accidental? not a chance. He did this to scare the kids.
