SGT (Join to see) it is sad that in this day and age, this is still happening. We like to think that society has evolved past its base instincts, but when stuff like this happens it shows just how unevolved we are. The fact that society looks down on victims, or worse puts blame on the victims shows how much this particular problem is still not taken seriously. I am sorry that you lost one of those you advocated for.

PO3 Steven Sherrill, This is always a difficult thing for me to discuss. My deceased sister, who was deaf and had mental issues, would run away from home sometimes when she got mad. Long story short, she would hitchike and she was raped four times in her life that we know of. Society seems to immediately blame the female. Even my parents more or less blamed my sister. The cops took a report but never pursued it. That’s the same way it happens in civilian and Military life. They can report it until the cows come home, but not much interest is taken in pursuing it. In my female Vet friends cases, they were afraid they wouldn’t make it home if they reported it, so they didn’t. I can’t blame them for anything that happened to them.

PO1 Mary Vermont, I’m sorry that happened to you. Seems like if they were afraid you’d report them, they should have thought of that first instead of thinking with their other heads. You probably thought you were one of the team and you trusted them and never thought about them doing that. Did anything ever come of it?
