My study of the American Civil War ended several years ago. After exhausting all of the popular and academic books written on the subject (including an eleven volume set on naval engagements of that war), I began consuming diaries and correspondence. I have since turned my attention to other periods of history but am often tempted to return to the Civil War, as when a new book of merit, such as those written by Jeff Shaara or Twelve Years a Slave, or articles such as this appear

Thank you for the post. I also was an avid reader of books relating to the Civil War, Bruce Cattons' series, Jeff Shaara, my parents bought the 4 volume set of the Carl Sandburg "Prairie Years" and "War Years" when I was a teenager. That started me off. I will read a book of interest today such as "A Team of Rivals". I tend towards the Revolutionary War period prior to and it's aftermath these days.
