It doesn't matter if he acted in self preservation or in the defense of others, he acted. When no one else did and when most everyone else's instincts told them to sit, he acted. And those actions lead to the saving of others. Whether or not he considers himself a hero, his actions were indeed heroic.

It is also sad that this was reported on BBC instead of the American news Outlets...guess they don't find it newsworthy that he save himself and others.

Lt Col Scott Shuttleworth - It has been (at least locally) on the news here. I just think that the best coverage of his reaction was on BBC. I agree that it is sad, but it doesn't play to the agenda, so downplay activate.
