This just in...US Army reportedly discharging personnel who could not make tape and repeatedly failed physical fitness tests. Many of these were recruited to fill critical positions....

There is more to the story than the headline suggests. The program was originally started to fill Army needs such as translators with narrowly defined requirements. The Obama admin opened it up to DACA and expanded who was eligible for the program which became a way to benefit people looking for a quick citizenship and provided less benefit to the military. The military added requirements for a background clearance since many of the desired applicants came from regions where terrorism is widespread and it is difficult to conduct adequate background checks in a short amount of time. Initially, some were allowed in the Reserves or Active duty without a full background check. Under Trump, the program was criticized as allowing foreign nationals into the military without a sufficient security clearance. The ones in the military or preparing to enter who were deemed a risk or could not be confirmed were likely the first to be released. The program is undergoing changes and will likely revert back to what it was originally designed for, a means for the military to recruit those with a particular skill set that can not normally be found in the American populace.

It is also interesting that the program was closed prior to President Trump even being elected, much less him taking office and the press tries to blame President Trump. MAVNI program suspended and defunded as of 24 June 2016, 2016 Election held on 8 November 2016, and Donald Trump takes office on 20 January 2017.
