I'm sure this is played up by the media, but even if only partially accurate this is not what the US is.

Lt Col John Christensen: I've talked with several immigration attorneys who have been inside the detention centers here in AZ and some other states. It's as bad as this mother says it is. We've had cases in AZ where children were placed in various facilities and were then sexually assaulted. AZ CPS was brought in and went ballistic about the facility. The government claims it is complying with state laws regarding the detention of children, but in all states where this is happening the state government agencies are saying very few of the facilities even come close to complying with state laws. The ACLU has had an ongoing case, 13 years so far, regarding the detention of immigrant children which resulted in an agreement entered into by the feds. There are ongoing violations and the ACLU is back in court on that litigation.
You are right, this is not what we are.

Patricia Overmeyer The administration's logic seems to be that if we make it as horrible as possible for kids the word will get out and that will keep immigrant families from trying to come to the US. That logic is illegal IMO plus is about as solid as a block of Swiss cheese.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen - I agree. It's based on punishment for actually following the law when a family seeks asylum. It hasn't stopped people from seeking asylum but I suppose it makes other Americans feel good that we aren't soft on these illegals or their kids. So heartbreaking.

It is a shame to see we have become so harsh toward our fellow human beings.

Sad.

Illegal immigration is not the same thing as presenting yourself to border control agents seeking asylum.

https://www.bushcenter.org/publications/articles/2018/06/immigration-questions

There are both international treaties/laws and US laws governing asylum seekers, and the conditions in which they should be processed.

The US has a long and proud history of accepting and processing asylum seekers; and in certain instances, a shameful history of turning it’s back on asylum seekers.
Our nation can, and rightfully should, do better.
