SGT (Join to see) Stood on the deck of the USS Missouri right at the spot the surrender was signed.

I too visited the Mighty Mo, in 1982 while she was at Bremerton.

I stood on the deck where the surrender was signed twice, once in Bremerton and once after the ship was relocated to Pearl Harbor.

The use of two Atomic Bombs on Japanese cities by the U.S. brought on a horrible new age of warfare. Even with all the death and destruction the bombs caused this action actually saved lives in the long term. My father was one of the thousands of U.S. troops waiting for the command to begin the invasion of Japan. Had the Atomic Bombs not been used and the invasion of Japan commenced
casualties among both military and civilians were predicted to have been in the high hundreds of thousands. Depending on how much resistance the Japanese military forces put forth in defending their homeland casualties could have been near one million people killed and wounded in combat action. Very informative article on the surrender of Imperial Japan. Thanks for the post David.
