Now, after a few years of rapid growth, some people are calling purple sea urchins a scourge.

Sounds like in the 60's here on Guam, it was said that the "Crown of Thorns Starfish" was killing the reef, and in 20 years all the reef's on Guam will be gone for the future generations.
Now, 50+ years later, all it did was pay someone sitting behind a desk alot of money to keep saying it. And, the "Crown of Thorns Starfish" are still here as well as the reef, now it's said, "Jelly Fish", and someone sitting behind a desk is saying it to get paid.
