Back in those days is the key phrase. As a country we recognized then that immigrants could come here illegally yet still become productive citizens. I respect that attitude and if you think about it, the majority in the country illegally are going to go out of their way to avoid any criminal activity if they are on a path to become legal. As in many cases, a small minority of illegal immigrants who commit crimes puts a stain on the entire immigrant community. Today we seem to have gotten to the point where an immigrant, whether legal or illegal, is viewed as something bad for the country. This is not the America I was raised in and really wish we could go back in those days.
