It is not illegal to make your own firearms. Sure, 3D-printed guns have a long way to go before they are really a viable product, but how is this any different than machining a firearm on a CNC machine, or building an AR from an 80%.
The only thing "illegal" here is that they can't be detected by metal detectors. That problem could be solved by adding a sufficient amount of metal to the design.
Any attempts to prevent people from making firearms in their own homes is an affront to liberty.

I'm still wondering how these gun barrels do not explode due the pressures generated by firing the ammunition?

I just heard on CBS News that the developer of this pattern is going to offer milling machines and directions. He is quoted as saying his goal is to copy every gun in the world and allow every person on the Internet to produce whatever they want.
