When some of my son's property was stolen at the Air Force Academy and they said it would be virtually impossible to find the thief it was explained to me this way. You have 1500 cadets per class, 15,000 kids from across the country apply for those spots. You are literally getting a cross selection of our society for a cadet slot in the academy.

So they say we have to expect we are going to get thieves, sexual predators, bullies, rapists, psychotic individuals, the medicated, the innocent, the geeks, the ........well you get the picture. My son's computer was cut from a 5/16" cable leash while he slept and stolen from him. The Air Force Academy gave him a new one and it was his responsibility to recover his notes, data for classes etc. But he had to redo a lot of his classroom work to get it done.

It would be horrible to think of my daughter in such an environment with upper class men and women exchanging sexual favors for completed assignments to a case of out and out sexual assault. My son knew of individuals when he attended that had their property packed for them and they were sent home in the middle of the night. Those that thought they could fight the evidence against them were subjected to the UCMJ Codes and didn't stick around much longer either, some escorted out in handcuffs. A lot of assault both physical and sexual however goes unpunished.

Article mentions three service academies. There are five Not all the cases involve sexual assault. Any "unwanted" sexual encounter can initiate an investigation. Very few result in a conviction.

Defining what is "unwanted" is up to the offended. This freedom to accuse can be greatly abused. A male who is accused usually has the burden of innocence to overcome. Even if not processed by an Art15 or Courts-Martial, administrative punishments can severely alter one's post academy career by downward adjustments of precedence order. An academy officer's career is managed around their class ranking.

Thank you very much for your input. I get it. If only the focus could be on achievement and excellence instead of on each other. But that is the natural, human course of things. Why would people expect it to be any different?
