Diplomacy has never been America's strong suit. The State Department has long viewed changes in Administrations as a nuisance (they know better than elected officials). American businessmen are often allowed to act as surrogate diplomats or they use their influence to manage the selection of diplomats and then manage them insuring that their prime objective is maintaining competitive advantages for American business. The Middle East in particular has been a muddled mess ever since President Carter knocked the props out from under the Peacock Throne (he thought the Shah was very un-Christian), and we've been stumbling around in the resulting mess ever since. Yes, we better be careful what we wish for...
