Do you think that the politicians are really fearful (for themselves) of citizens with guns? Or are they maybe trying to address what their constituents think is a problem worth looking into (gun violence in the US)?

It's a "National Emergency" when 1200 Americans are killed by illegal immigrants. Surely 30,000+ Americans killed by each other with guns every year is worth trying to DO something about, isn't it?

Where did you get this number? And how much of that would be suicides?

23,000 suicides. ~40,000 gun deaths total. So, suicides make up a bit over half of the gun deaths.

So, if we remove 23,000 suicides from the 40,000 gun deaths - we're left with 17,000 American/American gun deaths. That's still ten-fold+ greater than the 1,300 Americans that are killed by illegal immigrants (and a major reason for the "National Emergency").

Numbers from the CDC.

If they were serious about the non-suicide gun deaths they would focus their effort on the absolute punishment of those who commit violent crimes with firearms. They are not serious about that. They are serious about removing access to firearms period end of statement. Close to 400 million firearms in private hands with a billion of rounds of ammunition. IF the US had a "gun problem" it would be far more evident.

Sgt John Steinmeier - The United States is #1 in gun deaths - per capita - of all 1st world nations. That sounds like either a 'gun problem' or a 'people problem.' Are Americans just worse people than those in other first-world nations? Because that's the other option.

And I agree, it's not a "gun problem," it's an "American people problem."
