The older (and hopefully wiser) I get, the more my opinions change. I (respectfully) suggest that the "back-up" firearm, within the context of non-direct action/tactical (i.e., when your primary is NOT a carbine or rifle) is probably as much a factor of technology as technique. For example, I can see where if your primary is a revolver, the limited capacity in conjunction with the realities of speed loaders means another sidearm may be just as/if nor more efficient (though I kinda wonder about that). Personally, and based on my abilities... I figure I can reload another magazine with less loss of SA, and a more rapid regain of sight picture. My "dogma" is to let the threat(s), my abilities, and available technologies determine my tactics... and it just seems "better" to have more ammo (and a good blade) than try and incorporate another sidearm into the mix.
