The GAU-5 is not a “new” system as the article implies. It’s been around for nearly 50 years. We stopped carrying them when the AF transitioned to the M-4. There were 3 versions, the GAU-5, GAU-5A and the GAU-5A/A. GAU stood for ground assault unit or gun aircraft unit depending who you believe). What I liked about the GAU-5 is that it was fully automatic. I carried the GAU-5A early in my career. It was basically an Air Force version of the Army’s XM-177E1.
However, the Air Force did make some changes to the new survival rifle, including easy disassembly, and new sights. I am surprised that with all the changes made to the weapon, the Air Force didn’t change the nomenclature of it.
