Good morning RP. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Jupiter Abyss." In May 2019, NASA's Juno spacecraft imaged a dark cloud feature informally dubbed the Abyss. Juno was 15,000 miles above Jupiter when this picture was taken. Surrounding cloud patterns show the Abyss to be at the center of a vortex. Since dark features on Jupiter's atmosphere tend to run deeper than light features, the Abyss may really be the deep hole that it appears -- but without more evidence that remains conjecture. Juno's next close pass to Jupiter is in July.

Good Monday Morning Maj William W. 'Bill' Price!!! What a great photo of this huge dark vortex on Planet Jupiter! Here are a few paragraphs from a news article on the subject:
"NASA said: “Our Juno spacecraft captured this view of an area within a Jovian jet stream showing a vortex that has an intensely dark centre. “
NASA scientists Gerald Eichstadt and Sean Doran created the image using data from Juno's JunoCam imager, and dubbed it “Jupiter’s Abyss”.
The photograph was taken when Juno was about 9,200 miles (14,800 km) over Jupiter at approximately 52 degrees north latitude.
NASA space probe Juno has been orbiting Jupiter since 2016, having undertaken a five-year cruise to the planet.
No previous spacecraft has orbited so close to Jupiter, although NASA has sent two others to plunge to their destruction through the gas giant’s atmosphere.
