PO1 Tony Holland I know this is a duffelbog article but this is true of ever Marine. We are rifleman first and our MOS jobs second. They beat this into our heads my entire ten plus years on active duty. At any time, any Marine can pick up a weapon and instantly know what they need to do within the group to which they're assigned. In Fallujah, the Marine band assigned to that base were transitioned to the infantry because of how bad the situation got. I can honestly say that would never happen in any other service.

PO3 Jason M. - I think there is a difference in your definition and a Marine's definition of rifleman. There is far more to being a rifleman than knowing how to handle, operate, and put holes in bad guys from a distance.
To use an automotive analogy.
-Most everyone knows what a wrench is, and how to use it to loosen or tighten a nut. (Guy with a wrench)
-Some use it better than others, and have a grasp of good shop practices. (A handy man)
-A guy who can diagnose a malfunction and repair a car. (a mechanic)
-Most know what a rifle is, and how to fire it. (guy with a gun)
-Some understand the fundamentals of technique [fire and movement, fire and maneuver, suppressing fires, base of fire; plunging, grazing, flanking, and enfilade fires, employing groups with rifles to good effect.] (a Marine rifleman)
-Apprentices, journeymen, or masters in a tactical, operational, and strategic war craft, who understand fire plans, integration of supporting arms, tactical control measures, etc. etc.
