As the 2020 presidential election nears, analysts are still wondering about Kansas. Why did the Midwestern white working class shift to the right? Did the stated quest to shake up Washington benefit them? Since the 2016 election and the ensuing tax cuts, has the lot of this demographic improved? If not, can the Democrats win them back and, if so, how? In the run up to the 2016 election, J.D. Vance's hugely popular Hillbilly Elegy explained how Trump's acknowledgement of and rapport with the white working poor won him their votes. During the present election cycle, democrats would be wise to heed Sarah Smarsh's analysis in her memoir, Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth.

The President is giving at least14 Billion dollars to this year to rural farmers as 'Free Shit" the Democrats would not have been crazy enough to hand our biggest grain market, China, over the Russians. That 14 Billion will not even cover a significant fraction of the damage done so he will have to find more to follow it.

1stSgt Nelson Kerr - There is no shortage of hungry people out there to buy US grain, and Russia can't come close to making up the difference. The bigger Ag item that trade wars with China exposes to risk is soybeans. China consumes a fairly high percentage of them, but then again where else are they going to get them from? Farmers in the Midwest have options; they can grow corn (something insatiably in demand due to government-mandated ethanol blending) or wheat or any one of numerous other commodities.
I have a strong dislike for farm subsidies, a disproportionate amount of which go to big corporate interests, but Trump hardly invented them. They've been around in some form for decades.
I do think playing hardball with China is the way to go. They are far more dependent on trade with us than we are trade with them. They routinely steal intellectual property. They routinely manipulate their currency in order to compete unfairly in the market. If they don't want to play nice, fine. They need to be much more concerned that other manufacturers start making some of the cheap plastic things China has been immersing the world in for decades using their cheap labor and government subsidies.
