It is infinitely difficult to maneuver a tank wearing a mask as we also had to look through a prism.

One should note, one of the main design considerations for the M50 was vehicle drivers that needed to look through a prism or periscope to drive the vehicle. The canister on the M40 protruded to far making it difficult to get the correct eye relief and alignment. The M50 uses two lower profile filters, similar to the old M17, but mounted externally. We keep chasing our tail on mask design.

The safety rule of M1 drivers is hatch closed during movement, relegating them to see through prisms. This prevents decapitations. We also yell, "Power!" before turning the turret.

I always had problems with my mask - my lower jaw is very small so for the mask to seal (as in, there wasn't one small enough!), I had to keep my mouth opened widely. MOPP training was a always a royal PITA for me.
