How do we bridge the civ-mil divide?
"Research shows that 84 percent of post-9/11 veterans say the public doesn’t understand the problems faced by those in the military or their families. Civilians agree—71 percent acknowledge a civilian-military divide exists."
One of our Cohen Clinic Directors, a civilian who has worked with veterans for most of her career, shares her thoughts. Do you agree? What do you think?

The VA has some baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad people in it. Some managers will ignore rules, regulations, and laws. As for civilian support, I believe most of them close their eyes and distance themselves from the wars.

Especially the Vietnam Conflict which is the most despised, detested and protested on record. And during my volunteer work at our local VAC I was told to act in a "civilian" capacity, and not as a vet? And very few of the clinical staff had any hint about military culture, particulalry combat deployments.

SSgt Richard Kensinger - My greatest sympathies to Vietnam Veterans. We destroyed the emotional bridge from Vietnam to the US for veterans to cross. I was privileged to be invited to a 101st company reunion a couple times. It had sustained a 30% casualty rate. I sensed a strong current of energy as the veterans cried and laughed with each other. They were safe to unload pent up emotions. I just felt sad.

SSgt Richard Kensinger - As I have said during my adult life, organizations that do not follow SOPs, rules, regulations, and laws are corrupt organizations. Just look at the ant case for a recently deceased vet in their care.

And it's only going to get worse as the relative size of the veteran community diminishes and journalists focus on politics while ignoring those who serve/served

We need a civilian-military gap, military will never understand civilians and civilians will never understand military.
