Sad. Somebody will get nailed for lack of proper safety briefing about flood waters and also for having training during extreme flooding. Inexcusable command lapse. And now there will be some briefings on the matter in the future.
I guess if you don't know about the various Texas lowlands, and what gully-washers or flooding is you can wind up well like these dudes. Hood always kinda marshy in the early months with Winter, and yea spring flood are to be expected. It is much worse this year than normal. Never drive into water , if you can't see or don't the depth/terrain. And even if you had seen it earlier dry or drove through it before , ground underwater can be easily washed out.
I drove through that Owl Creek "intersection" areas many times, lot of churned up mud . We were training in early months and torn up the place really bad. As we were training during months that were prohibited usually Dec/Jan - March, for Desert Storm.
Never drive into flood water if you can help it and stay on hard roads. Using a ground guide would prolly be dangerous to that person too. SO IDK, they should not have been out there, training should have been stopped on account of flooding. Again, Inexcusable command lapse. Training has been prohibited in the past at Hood for environmental reasons. This should have been one. There was no imperative for training now. Wonder if it was because some officer liked to brag his unit was "In the field", while he is sleeping "in the rear", every night.
I have seen those types before. And they got people hurt and killed, about like this.
