My father-in-law was a combat surgeon with the 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division...he would never discuss what he saw at Dachau.

While stationed in West Germany in 1969 I visited the Dachau camp which had been preserved for the history of the place. It was twenty four years after the end of WW II but that Dachau camp still held the feel of evil. I visited the camp to see and learn some of the history of Nazi Germany. I can only imagine what your father-in-law witnessed at the Dachau camp.

I read a book with extensive coverage of the holocaust. I was 13 and too young to read it.
