I'm a simple sailor and still prefer a tiller to a wheel. I'm not sure that I would want to even ride on a self-steering ship. Nor would I want to even ride in a self-driving car. It appears that instead of simplifying the job of a helmsman, new technology is making it more complicated, even to the point of causing two ships to run into each other on the limitless sea. Imagine how it is in a self-driving car on crowded city streets

As a prior Boatswain's Mate, and a DCA and CHENG on this class of ship, I will tell you that the BMC will never not feel the blame for this. He will go to his grave with the weight of this. That being said, I don't think he is responsible, as in the condition they were in at the time in congested waters, the helm should not have been in program control, it should have been in manual control. That decision does not lie with the BMC, rather with the Senior Watch Officer, the Commanding Officer, the Executive Officer and the Officer of the Deck.
