Need for a modern highway system was emblazoned into the mind of a very young Dwight Eisenhower when he accompanied a post WW I convoy of about 80 military vehicles traveling from DC to San Francisco. Trip took over two months to complete and beat the dickens out of both men and machine.

I have had to remind so many people that the original purpose for the interstate system was for national defense purposes SGT John " Mac " McConnell. Every time we passed a slow moving military convoy the subject came up.

A big part was to be able to move military equipment and supplies around the Country in a more timely fashion in case of conflict INCONUS......This was during the cold war !

Yes it was. Quite a few ideas for the build. Like the Autobahn in Germany.
