I think the Russians are tired of the drain of blood and treasure and realize that whatever strategic aims they had are either accomplished (Crimea) or never will be (changing Ukraine into a Russian satellite).
Time to go.

The reality still is that the Donbas, Crimea and much of what is now the Eastern part of the Ukraine only became that way during the Soviet Era, the populations are heavily Russian, maintained their Russian language and culture, and the little fact that the the Black Sea fleet is based in the Crimea. If they held a UN sanctioned vote in these areas today, they would vote to associate with Russia. Since we supported similar breakups in the Balkans, isn't it hypocritical to object to the majority rule in these areas?

Is it hypocritical for a nation to want its sovereignty and its freedom? There was a country called America with genetic, economic, social, and imperialistic ties with England. The rest is history.
