Although having a family member die of a non combat related injury is tragic, by definition are those people gold star family members? By classical definition, I thought not. Have we changed to define gold star family members and anyone having a loved one who dies while a member of the military and not just those who were killed in war? Not meaning to be rude here. Asking an honest question.

Mother's of children whose child died while on active duty, wartime or not, are Gold Star Mothers. Grandparents, fathers, siblings, and children of those killed are Gold Star Families. See my link please on this post.

I believe the definition is any mother of a child killed while on active duty no matter what theater, when, whether combat related or not.

My information says that most these would not be Gold Star families. That in itself does not mean anything. In this case it gets wierd. Technically Korea is still considered an active war. No truce has ever been signed. Just a cease fire. There are still talks at certain times. However there is no active combat ongoing.
