Mattis' description of the meeting was a lot more benign. They tried to educate Trump, but it appears he made up his mind that he was a military genius and knew everything. His most serious inquiry for the DoD was the military parade.

Based on Mattis’ public persona I would expect him to downplay just about any kind of outburst from any kind of public official. It just doesn’t seem to be in his tool kit to blast someone publicly.
