I have often wondered about the distinctive shape of Soviet/Russian submarine conning towers (reminds me of a 747). Maybe some submariner or naval architect among us could explain the advantages/disadvantages). I haven't seen any similar American design and it seems that their submarines are the equivalent or superior to ours in some performance characteristics, such as diving depth (or so I've read). It seems that our advantages lie primarily in the electronics (sensors), weapons, and crew (training and qualifications), again ...or so I've read

reduces flat sail area for sonar echos, better water flow characteristics around the smooth hump and better,smoother water flow into the silent drive.
