OK, I'll say this again. Most of the influential histories of the US post Civil War were written by Southerners and presented a very whitewashed version of history. Part of that history is the why of Posse Comitatus. What most text books like to leave out is the Posse Comitatus was passed by a Democratic Congress at the end of Reconstruction to prevent Federal enforcement of the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments and it lead directly to the Jim Crow Laws in the South for the next 100 years. Don't forget that Grant used Federal Troops to destroy the original KKK. How it went from that origin to being the darling of Progressives is beyond me.
