I heard this years and years ago from a "spook" who said he was involved: The short version-Kissinger wanted the Israelis to win, but not so big that the Egyptians were so embarrassed they could not discuss peace. the Egyptian defeat on 6-7 June was rapidly turning to a rout. We had supplied the Israelis battlefield code books. On the behest of Kissinger, spooks on the USS Liberty were intercepting Israeli battlefield communications, translating them into the clear, and passing them to the Egyptians, trying to balance the end game and save Arab dignity. Israel evidently decided to send a clear message to the US, if we did stuff to contribute to the deaths of Israeli soldiers, they could make a "mistake."

Of course, I have no idea if this is actually true or not.

Lt Col Charlie Brown - It's not a good answer, but it is one that is plausible on all sides. It very well could be true.

A little 'out there' but it sounds like something we might do.
