All good advice. I would add a tip on using your cell phone or digital camera to help you. Always photograph your means of transportation where you last parked it or disembarked. If you park your rental car and walk to various tourist destinations in a city, it's very embarrassing not to be able to find the car after you're done sightseeing. If you have a picture of where the car is parked and have marked it on your paper map, then it's much easier to find. Also, some local people may know exactly where the scene in your photo is located. Also works for bus or train stops or where the tour bus is located. I used this trick in Italy and The Netherlands. Saved a lot of time and walking.

I believe there are phone apps that provide a "where's my car" function. Might work as well, but a picture is worth a 1,000 words. Especially if you don't speak the local language.

That's situational awareness. After decades of sailing as well as my military service, it's a habit. What always struck me funny was to take friends and family whale watching, and see them become frustrated when they never saw any whales even though they were jumping all around us
