Having been a recruit and a recruiter, I can tell you it's all about what you tell them. Unless your going into an MOS with a very high security clearance the realization is there not going to check! Regardless of what they threaten at MEPs. It's too costly to do a medical check on every one coming in and out.
I however, did almost get disqualified because of two scars on the back of my leg that look like surgical scars. But the truth of that was I sat on broken glass as a child, and pulled the large shards out myself and bandaged it myself for fear I was going to get my ass beat by my mom for breaking glass. So I had no medical records proving my scars were not due to surgery. So it was a battle of wits with the medical staff over it. You simply have to tell them to request medical records from the emergency room dating back more then 7 years (which is near to impossible) and by law they can't request or disqualify you for something that is beyond your control.

Disqualifying conditions vary with need. As long as the AVF fills the need, the DOD can be restrictive.
