Removing the military mindset in police departments

I have long been bothered by seeing police adopting military equipment and tactics. What should have been limited to SWAT has become pervasive throughout police departments. Well, at least in my opinion. However, there is one trivial detail in the photo that accompanies this article; the manner in which the cop on the far right is holding his pistol. I have seen this portrayed on TV, usually among bad guys, but never have seen it portrayed as practiced by anyone else. Am I wrong or is this a bad idea? It seems to me that no one can effectively lock their wrist in this position and some of the recoil needed to fully eject the spent round will be absorbed by the shooter, thus causing an incomplete reload of the next round.
