US congresswoman lhan Omar triggered frenzied pearl-clutching among right-wing pundits this week after she said all systems of oppression in the US needed dismantled.
Ms Omar made her comments during a press event in Minnesota, in which she addressed issues tied to systemic racism. She said that while it was good that policing in the US was under scrutiny, policing was not the sole contributor to systemic racism in American society.
“We can’t stop at criminal justice reform or policing reform. We are not merely fighting to tear down the systems of oppression in the criminal justice system,” she said. “We are fighting to tear down systems of oppression that exist in housing, in education, in health care, in employment, in the air we breathe.”

There are no "systems of oppression" in the United States. There are expectations; those assuming a person will conform to the laws they live under, that they will compete in a free market for opportunities-and succeed or fail based on their ability to compete effectively, that they will make the most of what education is made available to them, and use what social safety nets are provided as a step "up"... not a perpetual means of survival. Congresswoman Omar and her associates are not seeking social justice... they are seeking societal replacement. If they get what they want, these changes will not suddenly lift the poor out of poverty, end the violent crime pervading our metropolitan cities, or annihilate the abuse that accompanies depressed communities. What they will do is obliterate individual liberties, drain financial resources to the point of austerity, and extend power to foreign and domestic enemies who will undermine our most essential values.

This is my Congresswoman, and the event was covered by the local media fairly thoroughly.
The thing about Rep Omar is that she was real scarce when her district was on fire, only emerging to make substantive comment when it was clear which way the wind was blowing. Even then, she has been pretty careful to avoid picking a side. The thing is, the BLM affiliated folks and the Somali community are not particularly friendly with one another. Much of the destruction occurred just south of the main Somali community (Cedar-Riverside) and a large number of Somali-owned businesses were affected.
