Police units declining commitments to the Democrat convention. It was suggested that the National Guard be activated in support of the convention. My question; would it be legal to activate the National Guard in support support a political function (for only one of the parties)?
My gut reaction is no, for a multitude of reasons. By activating the NG, there is a incurred cost (not just current salaries but also retirement), which the state/federal governments would have to pay (in support of a political campaign). I’d like to hear from someone more in the know who can provide facts versus my “guessing”. Thanks!
UPDATE: I did some editing (above) based on some of the initial comments (below) and, after finding this tidbit of information, “It should be noted that these prohibitions do not apply to members of the National Guard or Reserves unless they are currently serving on active duty. For the purposes of political activity restrictions, DoD defines active duty as full-time duty in the active military service of the United States, including:
Full-time training duty
Annual training duty
Attendance, while in the active military service, at a school designated as a service school”
By the way, I was taught that it’s “Democrat”, not “Democratic”. Comments?

Ohio National guard provided support to the City of Cleveland during the last RNC in 2016. It was not in support of the party, but rather supporting the community that the event was held in to ensure safety of the citizens of Cleveland, OH.

There’s the political function (inside the building) and the event (outside the building). I don’t see a problem with the Guard being part of the outside security - that’s part of the city’s security plan.

The Governor of a sate can call up the National Guard in a State Active Duty (SAD yes that is correct) status. The state incurs all cost including reimbursing the Federal Government for use of equipment. The troops on SAD are paid by the state but the pay rate is much lower that if in a Federal status. Basically they are controlled my the Governor through the State Adjutant General. In many cases the State Adjutant General is not a Federally recognized General. He is appointed by the Governor.

Thanks! I’m aware of the above procedure, but there are limitations on which events the Governor can use SAD.
To your point, the taxpayers of Wisconsin would be on the hook for their costs. As for “TAGs”, in the past, some were only recognized at the O-6 rank by the feds. It’s a very political appointment by the Governor.

Govenor Evers of Wisconsin is not a popular Governor and I suspect that his standing by while rioters smashed the windows of the Capitol Building among his other missteps are going to swing the state back to Trump. Just waiting for Milwaukee to get trashed because in addition to the above restriction on ROE, they are also cutting the Police budget 10%.
