Anyone with any sense at all can see that getting rid of the police department is not a wise move.

Stupid for a large city but smaller city it actually has worked well for the City my Mother lives in. They were able to hold the line on taxes significantly by disbanding the Police Department and contracting with the County Sherriff. No real significant increase in crime, response rates have increased though. Everyone is happy how much money it is saving. Now they want to shift the Fire Department to a Volunteer Fire Dept.

Many small municipalities cannot afford to staff an entire department. Totally makes sense to hire a series of contract deputies from the SO. You are correct, in a major city it just doesn’t make sense.

What's the bummer?
You wanted them to get rid of the police department, just to see what would happen.

1SG (Join to see) - I know what will happen and sadly it will be bad for lower income neighborhoods like I came from but our hands are tied more and more everyday. Some places want to get rid of the police, others do not allow tear gas, and what police can do in hand to hand combat with subject is far less everyday. I hope that if one of these large cities defund the police the nation will see the outcome and realize not only are police needed, we need to pay and train them better to maintain the standards we expect out of them. I would never suggest this for a community but will accept it if that what a community thinks is best for them.
