I think it really started in earnest in the '90s. The last Republican president I truly admired was George H W Bush and compassionate conservatism. But since then they haven't been concerned with effective governing, they have instead been concerned with accumulating power.

It's really damaging when one party wants to govern and the other is against government. The best governing happens when there is an exchange of ideas on how to best govern. That can't happen when one side is vilifying government itself and so we have all lost.

It is strange that the party that claims to stand for personal responsibility has such a difficult time exercising that principle.

I know what you mean. The Democrats lied to us about when they claimed to stand for personal responsibility. Shame on them.

I may be missing the point. I am an Independent and have voted both sides. While I will never publicly speak I’ll of a President, I will state that if Republican politics are a result of decades of whatever, what will be the result of Anarchy becoming acceptable in our society. Lawlessness in the streets has people scared, not just for the immediacy of the situation, but for the long term. If certain leaders do not want to do anything about it now, what do they think these folks will do in the future. They are not of a party, they are not pea able protestors, they beat up and burn everything they can. It brakes my heart to see a country I have sacrificed for behave like juveniles in government and animals on the street.

If anyone believes that burning, braking, beating people up is acceptable and covered under the constitution, they (whoever they are) are part of the problem. This country needs our elected officials to act like adults and pass laws that support the people of the United States. We also need our citizens to respect the laws of the land and act like adults dealing with one another with dignity and respect. Debate is healthy, fighting is not. God Bless America. I would defend her again.
