There is a lie some Americans tell themselves when America is on its worst behavior: "This isn't America!" or "This isn't who we are!" or "We're better than this!"
You heard versions of this lie again this past week after armed insurrectionists stormed the U.S. Capitol on urging from President Trump, attempting to undo the results of last November's election.
Even in the halls of Congress, after the broken glass was cleared and U.S. senators and representatives were allowed back into their chambers from undisclosed locations, Republican Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska came back to this refrain: "Our kids need to know that this isn't what America is."
We are a country built on fabrication, nostalgia and euphemism. And every time America shows the worst of itself, all the contradictions collapse into the lie I've heard nonstop for the last several years: "This isn't who we are."

Chip, I agree wholeheartedly with your statement and the article you posted. It is long since pass that we as Americans began facing and addressing some hard truths. BIPOC have always know this to be a fact and it's starting to become more apparent to White America after the events of last week and the continued behavior of members of Congress

Knee jerk reaction to two weeks of lies in the news and no mention of all the great actions taken the last 4 years. It appears government/politics is taking over news, and now businesses. There’s a name for that, Communism.

On the contrary, I am not. We have all seen how the police and military have treated peaceful protestors in the BLM marches and demonstrations held against police brutality. Those people were brutalize, beaten, THEN put in jail. What the world witnessed last week was a stark reminder that every person of color is all too familiar with: There are two Americas and two systems of justice in America. While I do agree that everyone that acts violently at these events should be punished, you find room to admonish the actions of BLM protestors while trying to marginalize and minimize what the Capitol insurrectionists did. The only person advocating for a communist system of government is YOU, as you want one group of people to be able to do what they want, when they want, where they want, for as long as they want, and never have to concern themselves with the consequences of their actions while, in the same breath, you demand every other group of people be hammered down for even the smallest of infractions.
That's communism.

SSG Michael Hartsfield - I find the time to admonish the actions of all these people who would hurt others, that’s a plain fact. You brought up Black Lives Matter. I will bring up the fact that their leadership are self professed Marxists. Read up a little on that and see all the death created in the world because of Marxists/Socialists/Communists. I can provide you some numbers but you won’t appreciate them unless you have to dig a little and prove in you're mind there’re right. What I will provide you with is a link that describes German influence on education in America. Just reading the “View Preview” on the right will explain a lot of this influence. Now sometimes it’s interesting to think about what an article doesn’t say. All I want you to think about is what was happening in Germany in the late 1800’s, early 1900’s and I’m sure it will come to you. The bottom line is I believe the teaching of our nation’s history was sanitized in this time to exclude any mention of black people in our history, in addition to others. In my opinion this needs to be corrected so people learn their nation’s honest history. The next link I will provide you I found here on RP and is lengthy, over an hour, but well worth watching. The first half of it mentions portions of our true history, and the second part of it speaks to the falsehoods taught as truth in the 1619 Project. If after reviewing this information you still want to follow Black Lives Matter, at lease you will be doing so on an informed basis. Thank You.
