I never understood why people have to make up extra stuff when their service itself is honorable.

He didn't make up anything. People who've been to the school are commonly called Rangers.

Capt Gregory Prickett - Thanks for that and you are correct. The article should have mentioned he completed Ranger school. He had the tab so I would have said he was a Ranger too.

If he was authorized a RANGER Tab, what is all of the fuss about?

As it was explained to me, it's like being SEAL qualified but not being on a SEAL team.
All you got was the training.

There is a difference between being Tabbed and being scrolled. One is you just succesfully completed the school, the other is you served in a Ranger Battalion.

I don't like Cotton, but this is BS. Cotton was Ranger-tabbed, and had either an SQI of "G" (Ranger) or "V" (Ranger-parachutist). I had an SQI of "P" (Parachutist) and I served with a jump unit (2d Bn (Abn) - 143d Inf, 36th Abn Bde), but I would not denigrate someone who had been to jump school but not yet been assigned to a jump unit.

It is also common in the Army to call someone a Ranger who has been tabbed a Ranger.
