I am proud about his accomplishments and pleased he did not get PTSD. The Battle of The Philippine Sea was historic as the US fielded an armada of 600 ships. I believe one of the results is Japan lost all her few remaining aircraft carriers and her naval aviation became no more.

The army conducted its first land operations at Leyte Island with an amphibious operation. A few super Japanese battleships beelined toward the island to disrupt the amphibious operations. What happened is what legends are made of. A commander of a small destroyer charged the Japanese fleet. Other small US destroyers joined the battle. A commander of another destroyer announced in the intercom that surviving was not expected. Small destroyers slugged it out with giant battleships. The first destroyer fought bravely but was sunk. Her commander ordered abandon ship be he was not to be found, and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. A Japanese captain was so impressed by the bravery of the destroyer’s commander and crew that he saluted as the ship sank into the deep seas.
