Former aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk heads for dry dock, could 'generate odor'

The former USS Kitty Hawk will soon make a rare move, pulling into a dry dock at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard so its hull can be scraped before the warship is officially scrapped.

The shipyard is warning that the work may come with a smell.

"While the Navy is taking actions to reduce any impacts, the odor may be detectable in surrounding communities beyond the installation’s fence line," the shipyard said in a release, noting that "containment systems and prompt shipment will be in place to minimize odor by capturing and properly disposing of the marine growth."

The shipyard had hoped to get the venerable vessel into dry dock Friday but winds delayed the move. It will be scheduled next week.

Work the shipyard's dry dock six should last about 2 1/2 months.
