'It's Hurtful': Trans Youth Speaks Out As Alabama Debates Banning Medical Treatment

Syrus Hall, a 17-year-old from Mobile, Ala., has heard it all before: "You'll grow out of it." "It's a phase." "You're just confused."
"It makes me mad," he says.
Hall is transgender and in the early stages of his transition; he gets weekly shots of a low dose of testosterone.
"I worked really hard to be able to transition," he says. "I dealt with bullying at school, and people being mean to me just because I exist. If I can deal with that, I know who I am. I'm not going to go back."
So Hall is watching with alarm as the Alabama legislature advances bills that would outlaw hormone treatment for him and other trans youth in the state.
Thinking of the bills' proponents, he says, "Why should some guy who has never met me ... why should he get to tell me what I can and can't do? Why does he get to decide what is right for people who just want to be happy?"
This year, state legislatures have proposed a record number of anti-transgender bills.
"It makes me mad," he says.

Guys we’ve never met do that every day!
Personally, I don’t give a damn if people want to transition, actually- power to them. Do you and be happy.
BUT like driving, drinking, smoking, and buying a firearm there should be a min age.
And also I am 100% against bullying although I do see the value in a little hazing within limits- it truly does build character.
Live and let live but there needs to be guidelines. Who sets those? People MUCH smarter than me!

That's the problem, between how "progressive" or "conservative" a state is. Or the level of control the state should have over your children.
There should be guidelines, which we have within the WPATH but it contradicts what some states demand or wish to go away from due to personal, religious or political reasons.
Like if my daughter came out and in need of trans related care, I'd be breaking the law if that was a thing in my current state of assignment. Especially when certain states would have therapists who would give children HRT immediately or make them wait start until they're at least 21, with three years of "lived as opposite sex experience". Both extremes are wrong.
Especially as parents, we need to make more informed decisions instead of what level of politics that are going around.
