Heck, they already.coinrd the term assault rifle. Here I thought assault was a verb.

They did worse. They invented the neologism "assault weapon", so they could include shotguns and pistols in the "assault" category.
A cute bit of semantics, converting "assault" in "assault rifle" from the military meaning of the "assault phase of a military attack", to the common understanding of a criminal assault on an innocent victim in "assault weapons".
