Taiwan is not a country, it is a province of China. As Formosa it was occupied by the Japanese for a century, until it was returned to China after World War II. Chiang Kai Sheks Nationalists fell back there when they abandoned the mainland. Generations of Japanese rule left the population with a distinct personality but it is part of China. Problem is that any rescue of Taiwan seems to entail killing the entire population
