On April 16, 1940, Cleveland Indians pitcher Bob Feller hurled the first and only Opening Day no-hitter in MLB history. He was the professional athlete to enlist in the military after the Pearl Harbor attack. Not content to sit on the sidelines as a PT instructor, he would serve in combat as a Chief Petty Officer aboard the USS Alabama. He was a gun-captain on a 40-mm antiaircraft mount that had a crew of 24.

Other notable names come to mind: Robert Mitchum, Jimmy Stewart, Audie Murphy, Ronald Reagan, James O’Keef, so many others paid their dues to their country.
Almost forgot Paul Newman.
