I have a difficult time accepting his strategic change of the Marine Corps mission evolving into smaller groups of Marines occupying islands to protect the navy. What is a small group? What happens when there are thousands of enemy soldiers on the island? The Marines will have no tanks and an article stated perhaps it can borrow tanks from the Army. Will the Navy have a ship to carry Army tanks? That defeats the purpose of going light.

They fought large battles in the Pacific. What is our doctrine to bypass heavily fortified and occupied islands? Do more with less? Tell my four M1 tank commanders how superior the marines are. Tell the 160th pilots I know how badass the marines are. You might believe how badass the Marines are but they were also augmented by two infantry divisions in the Pacific War. But you are right the marines will do more with less as the commadant is getting rid of all the tanks and most of the field artillery, and there is also an astonishing thing transforming in the Marine Corps. They want marines to know how to swim. You won't be the last arrogant marine I meet.

I will tell you some of the dumbest things I have heard from your bretherens. One said the Marines kickass and the Army is an occupation force. Some of you marines are so full of it. Let's examine Desert Storm. The Army sent 3000 M1 tanks to traverse an expansive desert to practically flank the whole Iraqi army. The second Iraq war we sent our large tank formations to destroy the enemy for follow on forces. I supposed we occupied the beaches of Normandy. I was in aviation and rode in three types of black helicopters and later became an armor officer, but I never acted like I was badass and never bragged. Carry on in your conviction of branch superiority. Cpl Bernard Bates

You will remain delusional as you claim the marines have exclusive rights of being supreme fighters. You tell me why marines are better than my 4 tank commanders who cand send 160 rounds from the main gun at targets. They also have 1500 HP jet engines and are quick for 70 ton vehicles. You tell me the marines are better than the Army Special Oprations Aviation Regiment. If you believe in what I mentioned, then you are ignorant and have no clue what you are talking about. Your bias is remarkably stupid and myopic. Go ahead and feel special and think the marines are better than the other branches. Just stupid.

I have been out of the Marine Corps for a long time. I am lucky enough to come in contact with Marines over the last 40 plus years. What I like about the culture Marines occupy is their creativity. A few years ago at a dinner I sat next to a reserve Marine colonel who was soon made a one star general. I genuinely liked the guy and was very impressed with his enthusiasm in downsizing the Marine Corps, making it more lethal, and deadly. Berger is a creative thinker; an intellectual warrior. We need in a positive way nudge the US Army to be all it can be, with what looks like a dying slow budget. We need to be smarter with what we have.

What the heck does nudge the US Army to be all it can be? You implying the Marine Corps is more badass than the Army? I would like to read your response.

MAJ Ken Landgren - OKay let us not get caught up in this Okay. It was a play on words lol. No I would say more introspective. We do not need badass we need creative warfighters. This is not world war 2. We are soon — not fighting the Taliban. We are going to fight an enemy with 2000 years of tradition. With an economy that soon will put our economy in their shadow. With technology that can and will build a 6th generation fighter. Macho is not going to win wars.

Cpl Archie H. - Ok I will be introspective. Desert Storm the army unleashed 3,000 M1 tanks to outflank the Iraqi Army. In Iraqi Freedom the army unleashed the M1s again to destroy the Iraq Army. Most of the fighting and dying in Afghanistan and Iraq were soldiers. I did get caught up because you said something that was not funny or appropriate.

This is not the first time I have seen inappropriate comments about the Marines and the Army. A couple Marines were so full of themselves as they stated Marines kick ass and the Army just occupies land.

Now the Marines are whining they don't want to help the army in large land campaigns. They want to focus on attacking small islands.

MAJ Ken Landgren - If you were secure in your position you would not get so angry. I see nothing wrong with the Army other than their monstrous infrastructure. An infrastructure we need, and yet we need to complain about. There is waste we need to talk about. The nation needs to talk about ethics in leadership. There are units in the Army that are top of the rung. The older 2nd ACR in Merrill Barracks Nuremberg for one. Did a hell of a job in the Gulf War. I will not apologies for something I am not sure I am guilty off? I am not clueless on the US Army’s capabilities. If you would listen to what I was saying you would have heard me say it is the Army’s job to take on China not the Marines. This might be what you perceived as an insult. Let the Army do their job was said. I played off an old recruitment slogan is all. The Marines are a Naval force not a field army. But unfortunately they have been used as a field army. But I will add machismo badass and I come from this direction with load of combat experience has its limits. Never met an infantryman Army or Marine who survived combat, who did not surrender his baddass. We need warrior that think, not react to perceived insults.
